Jim Henry's comments on this new book:
This book by Ian Moultray, who has previously co-authored other books about Scottish speedway tracks and worked on various publications for Friends of Edinburgh Speedway, is the definitive history of the short-lived Ashfield Giants or Glasgow Giants if you prefer. It is a cornucopia of information based on numerous sources, including memories from Larry Lazurus and Willie Wilson, who wrote a special article for Ian.
The book includes a tribute to the greatest Giant, who was the biggest star in the Saracen Park firmament, Ken Le Breton aka The White Ghost. Ken was tragically killed in a track crash in his native Australia after the 1950 season. The book reproduces the telegram from Joan Le Breton advising co-promoter Norrie Isbister of Ken’s passing. Norrie also gave Ian a big insight into the Giants’ history.
Tuesday Night is Giants Night contains rare photographs of Norrie’s share certificate, a track licence and is illustrated by photographs* from the Norrie Isbister Archive bequeathed to Jim Henry and lovingly curated by Ian. The cover is a cartoon gifted by Bill Ritchie, a boyhood Giant’s fan, who invented a character called Ashfield Andy and offered to Norrie Isbister as candidate for inclusion in the weekly Giants programmes. Additional items include the script for a radio programme on speedway broadcast by BBC in 1950, a week-by-week breakdown to the half penny of a season’s gate money and has a full record of the Giants’ fixtures home and away 1949 to 1953.
