Speedway was hardly a long-term fixture in Cardiff. It featured in three distinct eras at three different venues.
The original venue was White City Stadium which was situated in Sloper Road. It was the last venue to open in Britain at the end of the pioneer year of 1928, the first meeting taking place on Boxing Day. It staged a full season of meetings in 1929, closed midway through 1930 and withdrew from league racing part-way through the 1936 season. A few non-league events were staged at the track in 1934, 1935, and 1937, following which the track closed down.
The second venue was a new stadium in Penarth Road, where Cardiff Dragons managed to complete two full seasons, in 1951 and 1952, before the track closed down midway through 1953.
Cardiff’s flirtation with speedway was reborn in 2001, when the annual British Speedway Grand Prix was, much to the surprise of many, staged in the Millenium Stadium, which was subsequently re-named the Principality Stadium. The Grand Prix was staged each year, 2020 and 2021 apart, until 2024 after which the event was moved to its current home in Manchester.
This book covers the story of speedway in Cardiff in all three eras. There is a wealth of statistical and background information, providing a fairly detailed record for those interested in speedway history and other historians alike.
